Invocation of the Great Bear by Ingeborg Bachmann
Big bear, come down shaggy night,
cloudier animal with the old eyes,
starry eyes,
break through the thicket shimmering
your paws with the claws,
star claws,
watchful we keep the herds,
yet spellbound by you, and distrust
your weary flanks and the sharp ones
half bare teeth,
old bear.
A cone: your world.
Her: the scales on it.
I drive her roll her
from the firs at the end,
snort them, test them in the mouth
and grab it with your paws.
Fear or fear not!
Pay into the collection bag and give
a kind word to the blind man
that he keeps the bear on a leash.
And season the lambs well.
s’can be that this bear
breaks loose no longer threatens
and chasing all the cones that come from the firs
have fallen, the great, winged,
who fell out of paradise
The bear, especially the mother bear, can smell a threat before seeing it, and fiercely defends its territory and family – protective to the end, like a spiritual warrior. The bear combines primal strength and power with intuition.
ADVICE: It may be a time for you not to be overwhelmed by a protective mother and the forces of anger. If the bear is you, use your wisdom and power wisely. You don’t need to growl; approach the situation like a teddy bear, and ask, stating your reason and purpose. You may need to walk alone for awhile to balance your mind. Find an environment where you are happy and free. Get plenty of rest and deep hibernation sleep to be ready for spring and a re-birth of energy, and potential leadership.
“Aggression in bears can be, and often is, a stepping stone to friendship. Friendship and alliances frequently develop by repeated interactions, with initial aggression that lessens over time.” – Benjamin Kilham, In the Company of Bears: What Black Bears Have Taught Me about Intelligence and Intuition
