Bee Advice

Poem, khamush.com:

The Hive by Jo Shapcott

The colony grew in my body all that summer.

The gaps between my bones filled

with honeycomb and my chest

vibrated and hummed. I knew

the brood was healthy, because

the pheromones sang through the hive

and the queen laid a good

two thousand eggs a day.

I smelled of bee bread and royal jelly,

my nails shone with propolis.

I spent my days freeing bees from my hair,

and planting clover and bee sage and

woundwort and teasel and borage.

I was a queendom unto myself.

Collective joy, a wriggle of the bottom, a dance around a sunlit flower, two yellow pollen baskets on its legs, and the sounds of solidarity, aids plant fertilisation and makes healing honey – and thus, bees are critical for Earth’s survival. Cell by cell, liquid gold is produced, the young are safe, and the queen rules.

ADVICE: It may be a time for you to work purposefully and with joy for the benefit of others – for sweetness is the best symbol of solidarity. Know your role and responsibility, and keep everything tidy in its own cell-like space. Be a part of the larger group, and honour the mother and caregiver. But don’t overwork or be overburdened with responsibility: even busy bees need a rest.

“To be successful, one has to be one of three bees – the queen bee, the hardest working bee, or the bee that does not fit in.” – Suzy Kassem, Rise Up and Salute the Sun: The Writings of Suzy Kassem
