Otter Advice

Poem, July 2017 from hellopoetry.com:

Secret Life of Sea Otters by Sam Temple

Far out past the breakers

a group of sea otters roll and play

in kelp beds.

nearby seafaring ducks and gulls

frantic for scrap

dive and squawk

splashing and throwing a sardine fit.

I stand upon the shore

wishing to participate

but the cold of the Oregon Pacific

keeps me safe and warm on the beach.

Still, I find myself imagining a streamlined body

riding currents and waves

a natural surfer never needing a leash or wetsuit.

The sun lowers and changes the patterns

shadows play between whitecaps

and I no longer can see shiny heads

pop through the surface

scan for friends or food

and duck again beneath the waves

where I can only imagine what is happening.

The otter is cute and funny, playful and friendly, curious and inquisitive, clever and courageous. Flexible in the water, sprightly on land, it bridges the two worlds.

ADVICE: It may be a time for you to go with the flow, and to experience freedom. Let go of stubbornness and expectations and just go with the river of life. Call in your friends and have fun. Reach out and give someone a hug, hold their hand, walk together, laugh together. You are never alone. Keep healthy and eat more fish.

“Somebody said that writers are like otters … Otters, if they do a trick and you give them a fish, the next time they’ll do a better trick or a different trick because they’d already done that one. And writers tend to be otters. Most of us get pretty bored doing the same trick. We’ve done it, so let’s do something different.” – Neil Gaiman
