Spring by John Gould Fletcher
Birds' love and birds' song Flying here and there, Birds' song and birds' love And you with gold for hair! Birds' song and birds' love Passing with the weather, Men's song and men's love, To love once and forever. Men's love and birds' love, And women's love and men's! And you my wren with a crown of gold, You my queen of the wrens! You the queen of the wrens We'll be birds of a feather, I'll be king of the queen of the wrens, And all in a nest together.
The wren is known as ‘the king of birds’ in Europe, despite its small size. So small and drab-brown, it is inconspicuous. Small is beautiful! While it is difficult to see, it is not difficult to hear, because its distinctive songs fill the air. It is an ever-active bird, constantly on the move, with quick short hops, looking for insects. Killing a wren is associated with bad luck.
ADVICE: It may be a time for you to reveal your distinctive voice to a wider audience – on the public stage, in the family, in meetings at work, busking in the street, for example. If timid, close your eyes and get ready for a burst of energy now – in song or deed. Maybe you are hearing inspirational celestial music that guides your imagination and creativity. You may be fragile at times, but you dart here and there in short energetic bursts to get tasks done, while spreading joy. Need a bit of confidence? Put on a spot of colour to ensure that you are not only heard, but also seen!
“The question before me, now that I am old, is not how to be dead, which I know from enough practice, but how to be alive, as these worn hills still tell, and some paintings of Paul Cezanne, and this mere singing wren, who thinks he’s alive forever, this instant, and may be.” – Wendell Berry
