MOTHERLAND
BY POET IN RESIDENCE, TAMAR ZHGHENTI: AUGUST 2024
Poem by Rainy Day Healing Poet in Residence Tamar Zhghenti

MOTHERLAND
It is a place like no other,
Inherited from birth, not gained;
That land, loved like a mother.
But it can wound you without a bother,
Inflicting pain, sharp and plain,
And leaving you too weak to gather.
It can cripple you, burn, or smother,
Punish, sacrifice, and drain;
That land, loved like a mother.
It will see your sisters and brothers
Tortured and heartlessly slain,
Yet the land still demands another.
And it is a ceaseless pother
Over blood washed by rain
In the land, loved like a mother.
Leave or stay – it’s the same hazard,
It will haunt you down every lane.
The place you love like no other,
Motherland that is no mother.
