MAKING MY PEACE … with the wellbeing of teenagers

… the importance of community support for teenagers and their mental health

“Community” is the 2025 theme for Mental Health Awareness Week in the United Kingdom (12–18 May). The week highlights the vital role social connections and a sense of belonging play in our mental wellbeing. This theme underscores the importance of supportive communities in providing emotional support, companionship, and a sense of purpose, all of which are crucial for mental health, says Mental Health UK.

During this significant week, it is essential to spotlight areas within mental health that often receive less attention. One such area is the mental health of teenagers, particularly those transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. This group of young adults faces unique challenges, including academic pressures, entering the workforce, and establishing independence, all of which can impact mental health. Despite these challenges, young adults often lack adequate mental health support and resources.

The importance of the wellbeing of teenagers is critical at a time that they are exploring self-identity and self-discovery, such as personal growth, family obligations, and their sense of belonging or their feelings of being an outsider. In their desire to be understood and accepted, teenagers and young adults search for belonging through friendship groups, family dynamics, and cultural identity.  Additionally, they face pressure to succeed through academic stress, perfectionism, or societal expectations, which often leads to feelings of anxiety and self-doubt.

In line with the theme of “Community” it is crucial to create inclusive environments that support the mental health of teenagers. This includes fostering open conversations, providing accessible mental health services, and promoting peer support networks.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 in the UK is an opportunity to build stronger, more supportive communities that prioritise mental wellbeing for all, especially teenagers who are shaping the future.

Making my peace with the wellbeing of teenagers, I will do the following:

  • Encourage teenagers to journal freely – the more people write, the more their writing processes improve, and the more they understand themselves with clarity
  • Encourage teenagers to express themselves – through creativity, exercises, community events, etc.
  • Understand and accept the views of teenagers as they shape the future
  • Read more literature written by teenagers for teenagers
  • Encourage more teenagers to rise
